Four long pieces cover the parts that decide whether a sofa is still comfortable at year five: the foam in the cushion, the geometry of the seat, the spring unit under a mattress, and the frame holding all of that together. Method
How the numbers here are produced
Foam grades are checked by cutting a 100 mm cube from a cushion, weighing the cube on a 0.1 g kitchen scale and multiplying by 1000, which converts grams per litre into kilograms per cubic metre. Seat dimensions are taken with a 5 m tape, loaded and unloaded, because a cushion measured at 460 mm in the shop sits at 420 mm once an 80 kg adult lands on the cushion. Spring counts are recounted from an unzipped mattress panel rather than copied from a label.
